Summer Plunder Days is the brainchild of Topsail Beach resident Dottie Netherton. Dottie originally developed the craft market as a part of the Town’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2013 – but its popularity ensured that the market would would continue and grow.
Dottie stepped down as Market Manager in 2017.
Dottie’s plan was to create a market featuring local crafts. The market’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it is not a “farmer’s market” and does not include produce vendors – the focus is solely on the talents, arts and crafts of local residents. Dottie built on the Topsail pirate history, conceiving the tag “Plunder Days” and issuing an invitation to “Come Pillage in the Village”.
The market was also designed to draw people down to the south end of the island and has received enthusiastic responses and support from local businesses.
Dottie herself is an artist who creates intricate scissor cuttings. Dottie has been a paper cutter for 30 years and is fortunate to have her work sold in museum shops in six states. She has won first prize at both Autumn with Topsail, and at the Orange Street Arts Fest. Dottie and her unique designs have also been featured in “Our State” magazine.
The market features approximately 25 vendors, who have all been selected for the quality and variety of their work.
